My Desperate attempt to prepare for QET

So hello again, it's been a long time since I scribble something here. Let's discuss brewing topics in the social media and newspaper headlines: Munarman's Incident.
Here is my mini-argumentative-essay :

Recent water throwing "incident" of FPI spokesman raised two diversified standpoints. Evidently, the majority regarded Munarman's action with disgust as it brings disrepute into religion. On the other hand, Munarman's defends himself by stating that his action is triggered by Thamrin's inappropriate debating manner (The Jakarta Post , July 28). However, it Munarman's refusal to apologize only made the situation worse. This essay will explain the reason why Munarman's action is considered as childish by stating its weaknesses and inconsistencies.

First of all, Munarman couldn't accuse Thamrin. The attack happened during a publicly aired talk show, clearly implied that both of them have the same position as guest speakers. If Thamrin's action offended him, it should be the moderator's responsibility to give a warning. Since he has a law degree and appointed as a spokesperson, I strongly believe that Munarman had understood the rules of debating. Thus, it is safe to say that Munarman's defense is blatantly illogical and naive; it only worsens both his and FPI's reputations.

…. To be continued.. In my mind.

Well, I won't continue this essay any further. Honestly, I am not interested in this topic at all.
Doing any more research would trigger my drowsiness.

I always think that the problem with Indonesian people are they tend to talk  both (1) too much and (2) too spontaneous. It is reflected from this incident. He won't fill today's headline if he apologized properly.

Cooking Words

As a not so proud Indonesian, when faced with an essay task, whether it was in my university days back in ITB or when I was taking my first IELTS, or even right now, I always want to thanks my Senior High School of not educating its students to write essay. When the principal said that our school's English top-notch on English Subject -- yes, he actually said that-- my bullshit sense tingled ; his exaggeration was obvious.

Unlike other Asian countries such as India, one may argue that Indonesia doesn't take English language education seriously. It could be shown from the absence of academic writing in both primary and high school national examination. As a result, most of us are coerced* to spend extra time (and money) on illogically expensive English preparation course when a serious English examination comes, e.g IELTS, TOEFL, SAT. Self study is obviously out of question since it is silly to grade your essays yourself.

So for readers who is in a struggle of enhancing writing skill, here I present you an useful link to pay back your precious time taken to read my pointless jeer on my imbecilic education system.

Things to mind in writing any essay, very useful

* I just can't find a more suitable word. We know that no one likes his precious gaming time wasted on taking English course.

Solving Overheat Problems in PC With Dual AMD/Intel Graphics in Linux

I used to own HP Pavilion dv3 2315-tx. In 2010, it was a good notebook with competitive price.

However, there is one problem that bugs me the most : that laptop has two graphics mode : Discrete (AMD) for gaming and graphics intensive tasks and Integrated (Intel) for general tasks.

The switching method works out of the box in Windows, but not in Linux.

The Linux boot process will load both kernel modules , namely radeon and i915 (the names may differ depends on your machine) thus producing unnecessary heat.

However, you can turn off the Discrete graphics to overcome over heating and preserve battery life.
First, I assume you use the open source driver, not the one provided by AMD.

I won't post the solution here as someone has explained in detail.

If you use non systemd managed distro (such as Ubuntu), you may refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics

If you use systemd managed distro (such as Arch, Fedora, etc) good news to you! Someone has created a systemd service that allows you to automatically turn off the discrete graphics at boot time. https://github.com/fredoche/vgaswitcheroo_systemd

Note that if you switch off Discrete Graphics after you load X, don't forget to turn it on again (exceptions if you use solution no. 2) or you may experience a Kernel Panic.

For NVIDIA-Intel, I am not sure whether the Bumblebee method really works or not.

Indonesian House Maid : Wasted Workforce

A caveat : this post contains some inappropriate wordings

Once upon a time in Indonesia (and maybe some other countries) , there exists the most useless job ever : "The House Maid"

I am not even sure whether it is a legal job or not : I have met some under aged housemaid and they seemed fine.

For you outsiders, let me give a brief intro :
In Indonesia, a house-maid does your household chores : iron clothes, clean windows, feed cats, cook dinner. It is a "cleaning service plus plus". And the most peculiar thing is : they stay in your house overnight. For free. And still get decent wages.

Here comes my defense :
  1. Indonesia is a poor developing country. We need to strengthen our industry, or foreign people won't stop harnessing our natural resources. I think it will be better if those housemaids gets a job that at least contributes directly to our industry (like a factory worker).
  2. The housemaid wage is too damn high. They live without paying rent, they are given free food from leftovers, and some good families also give allowances in special events such as lebaran.
That's why most women without enough money to pursue education prefer to be a housemaid.
  3. Most children in Indonesia will be lack of skills in handling household chores. I don't think I need to explain for this.

Arch Linux - You are the architect

If you deeply dug my Facebook Profile , you may notice some posts about Arch Linux.

So what is this Distro actually? What it makes so special such that I feel ashamed not to post about it?

If you install major Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mint, you are usually greeted by with an appealing greeting from the community, guiding you to start the installation. Otherwise, if you pick a Live Distro, you will be presented with a stunning desktop environment, batteries included, a culmination of the strenuous effort of the community.

But those aren't the epitome of The Arch Way

If we talk about Arch Linux, we talk about simplicity. And by simplicity, it is on the developer, not the user.

If a newbie wants to build an Arch Linux installation, the first thing he needs to do is to allocate time.
Afterwards, visit this site , grab a cup of coffee, and happy hacking!

Once you have tried, you will understand the relevancy of this post's title.

Enjoy a fast , lightweight, and bleeding edge distributions that you built yourself* !

Note :
This is the serious part : if you are an avid Linux user, and a Computer Science major, you should try to install Arch Linux. It really helped me to show off my skills understand how a full featured Linux desktop is built and configured.
Who knows that maybe someday in the future a gruesome client wants you to transform his ancient computers to a working machine.

Metaphor - Programming

Imagine in a dusky evening, carrying a lantern with limited oil, you are lost in a deep jungle full of monstrous beasts.
Your task : to fill your belly with a hearty dinner tonight.

By using adventure games as a metaphor, those wordings closely describe the task of programming.
You are given limited set of tools to solve a very difficult problem.
And tons of way to solve it.

You are to determine the best solution.

For instance, you can kill a beast and cook it for dinner, or chop some firewood and sell it for meats.
Or maybe you can try fishing in the river?
Or just wandering around the forest looking for the lore of magical mushroom that gives fortune?

A Warm Greeting
